A watch face can look different across Garmin models, even when its layout is the same. The display influences the colours you see, how you glance at the time and the way the screen behaves between interactions. Neither MIP nor AMOLED is automatically the right answer for everyone. Start with how you use your watch, then check the exact model’s specifications.
The short version
MIP
Made for the daylight glance.
A restrained, always-visible display that uses ambient light well. A natural fit if you spend long stretches outside and like checking the time without waking a bright screen.
AMOLED
Room for richer detail.
A self-lit display with deep blacks and vivid colour. A good canvas for illustrated scenes, colourful accents and a more luminous look indoors.
What is MIP?
MIP stands for memory-in-pixel. Garmin’s transflective MIP screens use reflected ambient light to keep the display readable outdoors, with a backlight available when light is limited. Their appearance is quieter than a glowing phone-like screen: colours tend to feel more muted, while strong shapes and clear numbers do much of the work.
For a concrete example, Garmin lists the fēnix 8 Solar with a sunlight-visible, transflective MIP display. Solar refers to its charging lens; it is not another name for the display technology, and you should not assume that every MIP watch has solar charging. See the official fēnix 8 Solar specifications.
What is AMOLED?
AMOLED stands for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode. Its pixels produce their own light, so black areas can remain unlit while text, colours and images stand out. That makes it particularly expressive for a watch face with gradients, a landscape or fine decorative details.
The screen’s behaviour matters as much as its appearance. Depending on the model and settings, it may sleep after a timeout and wake with a gesture, touch or button press. An always-on setting can keep a reduced display visible. Garmin advises avoiding static images at high brightness for long periods to help limit image persistence. These behaviours are described in the Garmin AMOLED display guide.
Battery life: compare the actual watch
Display type alone cannot tell you how often you will charge. Case size, battery capacity, brightness, always-on settings, GPS use and other features all contribute. Compare Garmin’s figures for the exact size and the mode you intend to use, especially whether an AMOLED estimate assumes always-on is enabled.
We would not choose a face based on a promised number of extra battery days. The useful question is whether you want its full appearance whenever you look, or are happy with a simpler resting display. Garmin explains that always-on changes display behaviour in its always-on settings guide.
What this means for ALLEZfaces
Our painted designs STORM, AURORA, EMBER, DUNE are available for supported AMOLED models, not the MIP models marked with an asterisk in our compatibility list. Their scenes are part of the design, so we do not present a reduced MIP version as the same visual experience.
Other designs in the collection also support the MIP models listed on their individual product pages. A simple layout can still be a great choice on AMOLED: choosing a screen does not mean choosing a particular style.
The large product images show the design’s awake appearance. Always-on mode may simplify it considerably; read the product description for that face’s behaviour. Colours and detail can also vary with the watch’s resolution, display and brightness.
Before you choose
- Find your exact model, including its size and Solar or AMOLED variant.
- Open the design’s product page and expand Compatible watches.
- Read its display and always-on notes, then check that its Connect IQ download is available.
A family name alone is not enough: two watches with similar names can have different screens and app support. The collection compatibility list is a useful starting point; each product page gives you the list for that specific design.
